Creating wildlife environments

Alba is an open world adventure game developed by Ustwo Games. The game focuses on exploring the world and conserving the wildlife. Here, in this specially commissioned video from Into Games, environment artist, Jessie van Aelst explains the process of creating assets for Alba.

INSPIRATION

Nature/environment games 1

Building on the plot of the Reset Earth original animated film, which premiered on World Education Day and was subsequently watched more than 710,000 times, Reset Earth single-player game for iOS and Android invites players to immerse themselves in a time-travel adventure in which they race against time on a mission to save the planet and what’s left of human life.

Nature/environment games 2

Beyond Blue is a single-player narrative adventure that takes you deep into our planet’s beating blue heart. Explore the awesome wonder and unbounded mystery that exists within the world’s ocean. It was commissioned by the BBC to support the Blue Planet II series.

Nature/environment games 3

Each scenario in Endling addresses a major issue in the modern world, including problems that arise from intensive livestock, pollution of the seas and rivers, the accumulation of electronic waste, overpopulation, and climate change.

Nature/environment games 4

Among the games that address the consequences of global warming, the most notable is Civilization VI. This is a turn-based strategy game where players choose from a broad cast of historical leaders. With the passing of the centuries and technological development, industrialised civilisations see an increase in a global climate change meter which takes into account rising temperature and the melting of the polar ice caps, thus failing to confront an energy transition will lead to severe natural disasters.

Nature/environment games 5

A New Beginning - Final Cut is a cinematic adventure-thriller done graphic novel-style. In this charming and witty adventure, earth is on the brink of impending climate cataclysm. It's essential to travel the world in order to spare mankind and save the whole from this terrible fate.

Nature/environment games 6

Bee Simulator started when reading a book about bees, which made the developer realize the potential of stories told from unique perspectives. “During development we focused on raising awareness of bees with our players, educating players on how major a role bees play in our environment and about how important they are for us as pollinators, and highlighting the major troubles they’re facing right now”.

Nature/environment games 7

Minecraft — which has sold 200 million times in all formats — has a Climate Hope City map that invites players to explore real-world green solutions like vertical farms and an energy generator that can produce different types of green energy. Climate Hope City is full of technology to positively tackle climate change.

Nature/environment games 8

Division 2 from 2018 is set in a ruined Washington DC where mankind's grip has weakened and nature is making a tentative comeback. Fireweed and saplings sprouting through the sidewalk, moss growing on the bleached faces of the great and good and forgotten. Often at the beginning of a mission you'll be crouched low and racing towards an enemy camp and there it will be, the urban deer, rising to its tottering legs and bouncing off.

Nature/environment games 9

Crysis 3 is set in a post-apocalyptic New York City which merges the urban landscape of Crysis 2 and the forest setting of the original Crysis. Soak in all the beautiful scenery and graphics in Crysis 3 that the CryEngine3 powers.

Nature/environment games 10

In Mushroom 11 as life struggles to gain a foothold in a devastated world, a new lifeform emerges from the rubble. Mold yourself into any shape as you explore this strange, challenging landscape. The eerily beautiful visuals are complemented by the ethereal music of electronica legend The Future Sound of London.

Nature/environment games 11

The Witcher 3 is an award-winning celebration of the natural world in medieval times. The game’s mountains are geologically convincing. The river bends are natural with believable naturalistic landscape design. Additionally, the game situate plants in where we would see them grow in real-world locations. Celandine grows next to streams, wolfsbane can be found in meadows, and fool’s parsley (aethusa cynapium) grows near cultivated fields and paths.

Nature/environment games 12

Sims, the life simulation game that first emerged in 2000, has released an Eco Lifestyle expansion pack where players can run a clean-water and recycling project or build wind turbines on rooftops to decrease their carbon footprint. True eco-warriors can even go dumpster diving.

Nature/environment games 13

A young audience can learn the basics of recycling with the Litter Critters. Kids sort rubbish into four different litter categories: recyclables, compost, electronic waste, and landfill waste. In Easy Mode, users sort trash into one category of litter at a time. In Hard Mode, users must sort trash into all four categories at once

A game for a similar market is the Gro Recycling game:

GAMES MUSIC/SOUNDTRACKS

Christian from Spitfire Audio shares with us how he constructs additive music for computer games.

Production Music: video games 4

Video Game Melodies. You know them. Even if you don't play videos games, you probably know one or two. Not only are some video game melodies catchy, they also capture the feel of the game and it's story and characters.
